February is American Heart Month.
Heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women in the United States. Heart disease causes more deaths in the United States than all types of cancer combined.
Lower your risk for heart disease by taking these steps:
-Eat healthy by eating plenty of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and fat-free or low-fat dairy products. Limit saturated and trans fats, added sugars, and sodium.
-Get active. Try to do 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity every week.
-Quit smoking and stay away from secondhand smoke.
-Control your cholesterol and blood pressure.
-Avoid drinking alcohol but if you choose to drink alcohol, limit your drinking to no more than 1 drink a day for women and no more than 2 drinks a day for men.
-Maintain an ideal body weight. If you are overweight or obese, losing just 10 pounds can lower your risk of heart disease.
– Manage stress.
Take these steps today to lower your risk for heart disease.
